Ghirardelli Brownie Mix Recipe Variations

These are delicious, but there are ways to improve boxed brownies. Some simple additions significantly impact and don’t take extra time to prepare.

What Can Be Added To Brownie Mix?

  1. Milk instead of water — If you want fudgy brownies, try swapping the water with an equal amount of milk. The fat and flavor from the milk help accentuate the brownies by adding richness and more depth of flavor.
  2. Butter instead of oil – If you want more rise and a fluffier finished product, substitute an equal amount of melted butter for oil. These won’t be as fudgy.
  3. Alcohol instead of water – Swap out water for your favorite alcohol for a great Ghirardelli Brownie Mix variation. Anything from equal parts water to alcohol to ½ milk and half spirits will do. We love bourbon, Kahlua, Bailey’s, and even Amaretto.
  4. Raspberry brownies — The sweetness of Raspberries is the perfect complement to the chocolate. Mash three cups of berries into a paste and pour it on top of the batter before putting it in the oven.
  5. Espresso powder – Add two teaspoons to the mix for a deeper flavor. It won’t taste like coffee; it just amplifies the chocolate taste.
  6. Sprinkles — WHo says that only cupcakes are suitable for celebrations? Brownies can be festive, too! Top them with sprinkles before baking for a colorful treat.
  7. Peanut butter — Melt ¾ cup peanut butter in a microwave to thin. Pour on top of brownie batter before baking.
  8. Coffee brownies — Replace the water with your favorite coffee for a yummy treat. Brew the coffee and allow it to cool before adding it.
  9. Candy — Use that leftover Halloween candy by adding it to the mix for our favorite Ghirardelli brownie mix variation. Reese’s peanut butter cups, M&M’s, and Milk Duds all work.
  10. Cookie brownies—If you want to wow your friends and family, make this recipe. Spray an 8×8 pan with cooking spray. Press cookie dough into an even layer in the pan. Pour brownie mix on top and bake for 55 minutes to an hour.
  11. Ghirardelli Brownie Mix Cookie Recipe — A few pantry items transform this mix into a gooey cookie everyone will love. We tried and loved Back To My Southern Roots’ Easy Brownie Mix Cookies recipe.
  12. Black Bean Brownies — It is possible to make brownies healthier without making too many trade-offs. Add a 15-ounce can of rinsed and drained black beans and 1 cup of water. The brownies won’t be as fudgy and taste more like cake, but the added fiber is a great benefit.
  13. Chocolate Sauce — Top with chocolate sauce for more of a sweet treat.

Can shredded or chopped zucchini be added to the mix? Would anything else need to be changed?

    • Kristen says

      Hi Joan,
That’s a great idea! I haven’t tried it but my concern would be the extra moisture zucchini would add. But I think if you wring them out in a clean kitchen towel it would remove enough excess water that you could proceed with the recipe as directed. If you try it, let me know how it works out!

FAQs

Can I use milk instead of water in Ghirardelli brownie mix? ›

Most brownie mixes call for water. While water does the job, you can add some extra flavor and moisture by mixing some of that water with something richer, like milk. If you want to swap it out completely, be prepared for a more chewy and fudge-like brownie from the extra fat.

Are Ghirardelli brownies fudgy or cakey? ›

Ghirardelli perhaps had a better chocolate flavor than Pillsbury but had dry edges. Otherwise, those brownies had an excellent texture with a fudgy center, and I thought that the addition of chocolate chips was a great touch.

How do you doctor up a box brownie mix? ›

Boxed brownies can be their own blank slate for just about any snacks, sweets, or baking scraps you've got in your pantry or fridge. Add a teaspoon of instant coffee or espresso powder. Throw in a handful of nuts—pecans, walnuts, macadamia, whatever you have on hand. Scoop in a palmful of dried or frozen fruit.

Can I use mayo instead of eggs in brownies? ›

It's a swap that makes sense since mayonnaise is made of mostly oil and egg. It provides moisture, which keeps the baked goods soft and tender, just like oil does.

What does adding milk instead of water do to brownies? ›

One change is to use milk or heavy cream instead of water. This change will make brownies more moist and gooey since milk is more fatty and flavorful than water. A second change is to use butter instead of oil. For similar reasons to using milk, butter adds a rich and more decadent quality to the batter.

Can you use butter instead of oil in Ghirardelli brownie mix? ›

You can absolutely substitute butter for the vegetable oil. Use the same quantity specified in the directions (for example, if it calls for 1/3 cup of oil, use 5 1/3 tablespoons of butter). Melt it down, then let it cool a bit. You might not ever go back to oil!

What makes a brownie more fudgy? ›

Fudgy brownies have a higher fat-to-flour ratio than cakey ones. So add more fat—in this case, butter and chocolate. A cakey batch has more flour and relies on baking powder for leavening. The amount of sugar and eggs does not change whether you're going fudgy or cakey.

Is Duncan Hines brownies better than Betty Crocker? ›

Personally, I grew up with Pillsbury and Betty Crocker most often, but once I tried Duncan Hines mixes as an adult, I found them to be superior. I think they are moister and richer in flavor and texture.

What does adding an extra egg to brownie mix do? ›

If you opt to add more eggs, say double the amount, something interesting happens. Even though you are adding more moisture, the air bubbles that you catch in the extra eggs add volume, which decreases the density of your final product. This makes your brownies rise and gives them a much more cake-like texture.
