What is the best way to cook and eat asparagus?

In our opinion, the best way to cook and eat asparagus is to roast it in the oven. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200ºC). Snap off the tough ends of the asparagus and lay them on a baking sheet, season with salt, pepper, and a drizzle of olive oil. Bake for 10-15 minutes until lightly browned and easily pierced with a fork. Enjoy asparagus simply with a squeeze of lemon juice or as part of a main dish.

What goes well with asparagus?

Some popular dishes that go well with asparagus include roasted potatoes, roasted mushrooms, quinoa, couscous, pasta, rice, salad, grilled fish, and chicken.

FAQs

What is the best way to cook and eat asparagus? ›

Chop the spears into 1-inch pieces and drop them into the boiling water for about 1 minute, or until tender but still bright green. Use a slotted spoon to transfer the blanched asparagus to the ice water and chill for 1 minute. Drain, pat dry, and toss into salads, pastas, or squeeze with lemon and enjoy!

Does asparagus get more tender the longer you cook it? ›

Does asparagus get softer the longer you cook it? Yes, it does. But you don't want to cook it too long or it will be soggy. That's fine when using in a soup, but not so much as a roasted side.

Should asparagus be soaked in water before cooking? ›

I trim the ends and then rinse the stalks and let them sit in cold water for five minutes. It hydrates the asparagus, and they cook more quickly, for they are already wet with some moisture within them. Do not soak them for thirty minutes, you are not trying to get them soggy.

What's the healthiest way to eat asparagus? ›

Try adding shredded, raw asparagus to pasta dishes and salads. Alternatively, enjoy the spears lightly steamed or sautéed in a frittata, or as a stand-alone side dish. Asparagus is a nutritious choice, regardless of whether it's cooked or raw. Try eating a combination of the two for maximum health benefits.

What is the best taste for asparagus? ›

Our Head to Head Taste Test
  • Ariane - very nice, good flavour.
  • Millenium - very nice chunky, a bit bitter raw.
  • Mondeo - Incredibly tender, more stringy end, more delicate, more subtle flavour, bland.
  • Pacific 2000 - Very tender, great flavour, similar to Mondeo for flavour, slightly bitter raw.

How do restaurants do asparagus? ›

Roasting intensifies the taste but sacrifices some of the brightness. So here's the simple method I borrowed from restaurant kitchens: Parcook the spears, then quickly saute them in a small amount of olive oil. With a quick sprinkling of salt and pepper, it's done.

What tastes better, thin or thick asparagus? ›

While both types tasted equally sweet, nutty, and grassy, we expected the delicate-looking thin spears to be more tender. To our surprise, the thicker spears actually had the better texture (if only by a hair).

Why is my asparagus tough after cooking? ›

Asparagus contains an enzyme that creates a woody compound called "lignin," at the end of each spear. Lignin is not softened by heat, so it remains fibrous and tough after cooking. To eliminate lignin, snap (don't cut) the end of each spear just before cooking.

What to serve with asparagus? ›

The asparagus makes a gorgeous side dish to serve with fish, chicken, pork, or really any protein you like.

How to cook asparagus like a pro? ›

On a baking sheet, toss the trimmed spears with enough olive oil to coat and season with salt, pepper, and garlic powder to taste. Then roast the asparagus in the oven at 425 degrees Fahrenheit for 20 to 25 minutes. That will give the veggie a sweet, roasted depth of flavor and hearty-yet-tender texture.

How long will asparagus last in the refrigerator? ›

If you need to buy it in advance, asparagus will last in the fridge for up to five days. Otherwise, it can get stringy and tough.

How to cook asparagus so it's not bitter? ›

Cut off the woody bottom part. Don't over cook it -steam for 5 to 6 minutes, depending on the thickness. Serve with a squeeze of lemon juice and butter. Lemon juice balances out the bitterness of leafy green vegetables like spinach, broccoli, asparagus, kale and collard greens.

Is it better to eat asparagus raw or steamed? ›

To reap the greatest health benefits, consider incorporating both cooked and raw asparagus into your diet. That said, from a nutritional standpoint, you can't go wrong with either option.

Should you peel asparagus before cooking? ›

Thicker stalks develop a woody exterior but retain their tender interior, so it's a good idea to peel that tough outer layer away, leaving you with a long, tender stalk of asparagus and much less waste than if you simply snapped half of it off.

Should asparagus be hard or soft after cooking? ›

Undercooked asparagus, crunchy and forbidding, can taste like a punishment. But if you simmer asparagus long enough to cook it through, its texture becomes soft and almost creamy, and its lovely flavor comes into full bloom.
