First introduced to American TV in 2024, The Floor pits 81 contestants against each other in a heated battle for territory. To stay in the game, players must defeat their opponents in all-of-nothing picture-based trivia duels by making sure their timer doesn’t run out!
Rules of The Floor
The floor is a trivia game whereby contestants must face each other head-to-head in a quest for a $250,000 grand prize. Winning a round ensures a player will continue playing, but if a player loses a round they will be completely eliminated from the game.
In terms of the game’s setup, each of the 81 contestants is placed upon a unique square of a 9 x 9 grid. Each player also has their own special trivia category that can only be defended one time.
At the start of the game, a contestant is chosen at random to be involved in the first head-to-head. They are then allowed to choose a player to compete against who is placed upon a square directly above, below, left or to the right of them.
Players will see the specialized topics for the players they can compete against to help them make their decision. It is also important for contestants to take into consideration the position of squares that they will land on, as they will need to continue on a path that gives them the best chance of success.
Challenges are picture-based and require players to guess something to do with its content, with each player taking turns to answer questions as their own 45-second timer ticks down. When correct answers are given the current player’s timer will stop running, the turn will switch to the opponent and their timer will start instead.
If an incorrect answer is given the player will have to keep on guessing as the timer ticks down or say “pass” and wait 3 seconds to have a go at another question. The challenge will end when one of the player’s timers has run out and the player with time still on the clock will win the duel.
After a challenge has ended, the loser of the round will be eliminated and the winner will remain in the game, taking over the total territory of the defeated player and will later have to defend their unique category if challenged. The winner of the round will then be given a choice on whether to continue playing by challenging a player on a neighboring square, or to allow another player to take the floor (chosen at random from those who have not yet dueled).
The player with the most amount of territory at the end of each of the first 9 episodes of a season will receive $20,000 (shared equally if multiple players hold the same amount of squares). This can give duel winners a greater incentive to carry on playing after each successful round.
When the game eventually gets down to just two players, the player who has a greater amount of territory will get to decide the category that will be used for the final duel. The player who wins the duel will be declared the winner, taking home the grand prize plus any winnings from previous episodes.
